Julia Nephew
Julia Nephew lives in Glen Ellyn with husband Eric and step-daughter Emily, who is in the 8th grade at Hadley Junior High. Julia moved to Glen Ellyn in 2003. Since becoming a Glen Ellyn resident,
Julia has joined Eric and Emily in their many community activities including many programs of the Glen Ellyn Park District, such as: the 4th of July celebrations and cardboard boat regatta, ice skating on Lake Ellyn, and park district classes.
In May of 2008 she began course work at Dominican to earn a Master of Library and Information Science degree and will complete that work by June 2009. Julia has 16 years of teaching experience at the college undergraduate level and holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Julia has led several organizations in addition to her leadership and committee work in various capacities as a professor. She has been the treasurer of the North American branch of a small international non-profit organization since its creation. Julia filed the IRS and other paperwork that earned the group its non-profit status. Julia has experience writing, winning and maintaining grants in support of service learning and research projects. She has been an active member and volunteer for the Sierra Club for more than eight years and co-founded a tenant resource center.
Julia believes that team and individual sports are essential to each person’s physical and social development. She was among four female students who joined her junior high's soccer team as soon as girls were allowed to take part. Other sports that Julia enjoyed in junior high and high school were tennis, basketball, cross country and downhill skiing, field hockey, track and cross country running.
Julia is not satisfied to sit back and criticize, but rather is prepared to step in and lead when she identifies a problem. That is why she is running for Park District Board Commissioner. She will make choices through actively listening to what the residents of Glen Ellyn want and by leading a transparent governing process.
